Why the Giants can win… They beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl four years ago, denying New England what would have been the first 19-0 season in NFL history. New York is on the same kind of roll now, having beaten the fifth-seeded Falcons, the top-seeded Packers and the second-seeded 49ers in the NFC playoffs after going a modest 9-7 during the regular season. They’ve won five straight games since they fell to 7-7 with their second loss of the season to the Redskins. QB Eli Manning seeks his second Super Bowl triumph. He had two 1,000-yard receivers during the regular season in Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, and he’s had much more help lately from his running game and defense. Just as he did four years ago, K Lawrence Tynes put the Giants in the Super Bowl with an OT field goal in the NFC title game. The Giants beat the Patriots during the regular season, 24-20, at Gillette Stadium on Nov. 6. Manning threw the game-winning TD pass to TE Jake Ballard with 15 seconds left in that game.

Why the Patriots can win… They get their chance to avenge the Super Bowl defeat that cost their 2007 team the chance to be remembered as perhaps the greatest ever. Coach Bill Belichick and QB Tom Brady make their fifth Super Bowl appearance together, the most ever by a coach and quarterback tandem, seeking their fourth Super Bowl victory. Brady is tied with Joe Montana for the most career postseason victories by a QB, with 16. He must rebound from a two-interception, no-TD-pass performance against the Ravens in the AFC title game. The Patriots ranked 31st in the league in total defense during the regular season but played better on that side of the ball in playoff wins over the Broncos and Ravens.

Hurricane Preparation Checklist

What should I do?

 Make sure you have Renter’s Insurance!!! Be sure you have your policy numbers and claims dept. phone number handy. Remember…the apartment community’s insurance covers our buildings…not your belongings.

 Listen to a NOAAWeather Radio for critical information from the National Weather Service (NWS).

 Check your disaster supplies and replace or restock as needed.

 Bring in anything that can be picked up by the wind (bicycles, lawn furniture on balconies, etc.)

 Close windows and doors.

 Turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and keep them closed as much as possible so that food will last longer if the power goes out.

 Turn off propane tanks and unplug small appliances.

 Fill your car’s gas tank

 Talk with members of your household and create an evacuation plan. Planning and practicing your evacuation plan minimizes confusion and fear during the event.

 Learn about your community’s hurricane response plan. Plan routes to local shelters, register family members with special medical needs as required and make plans for your pets to be cared for.

 Evacuate if advised by authorities. Be careful to avoid flooded roads and washed out bridges.

What supplies do I need?

 Water—at east a 3 day supply; one gallon per person per day.

 Food—at least a 3 day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food.

 Flashlight.

 Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAAWeather Radio, if possible).

 Extra batteries.

 First aid kit.

 Medications (7-day supply) and medical items (hearing aids w/extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, cane).

 Multi-purpose tool.

 Sanitation and personal hygiene items.

 Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, lease to residence, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies).

 Cell phone with chargers.

 Family and emergency contract information.

 Extra cash.

 Emergency blanket.

 Map(s) of the area.

 Baby supplies (bottles, formula, baby food, diapers).

 Pet supplies (collar, lease, ID, food, carrier, and bowl).

 Tools/supplies for securing your home.

 Insect repellent and sunscreen.

 Camera for photos of damage.

What do I do after a hurricane?

 Stay alert for extended rainfall and subsequent flooding even after the hurricane or tropical storm has ended.

 If you evacuated, return home only when officials say it is safe.

 Drive only if necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed-out bridges.

 Keep away from loose or dangling power lines and report them immediately to the power company.

 Stay out of any building that has water around it.

 Inspect your home for damage. Take pictures of damage, both of the building and its contents, for insurance purposes.

 Use flashlights in the dark. Do NOT use candles.

 Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are sure it’s not contaminated.

 Check refrigerated food for spoilage. If in doubt, throw it out.

 Wear protective clothing and be cautious when cleaning up to avoid injury.

 Watch animals closely and keep them under your direct control.

 Use the telephone only for emergency calls.

Keep Your Pet Healthy in Hot Weather

When the weather gets hot, you can escape inside, fix yourself a cool drink or change your clothes. Your pet, though, doesn’t have as many options for staying cool. As your pet’s caretaker, make sure you’re doing everything you can to help him survive summer weather comfortably.

See the vet

To prepare for summer, make sure your apartment pet has its seasonal check-up. Warm weather is the worst time for fleas and ticks, so get your pet on an effective parasite control program. If your dog or cat isn’t on year-round heartworm medication, you should also have him tested.

Shade and water

If your pet spends the majority of her day outside in warm weather, provide her with shade and, if possible, an unlimited amount of water with an automatic dispenser. Also, be sure not to over-exercise your pet — consider cutting walks or runs a little shorter than you would in cooler weather.

Know heat stroke warning signs

If your pet does get over-heated, watch carefully to see if your pet is in danger. If he is panting or drooling excessively, has trouble breathing, or seems weak or lethargic, get him to a cool place right away. Flat-faced dogs and Persian cats are especially susceptible to overheating because it is harder for them to pant. These pets should always be kept in a cool environment. It’s also a good idea to give your pet a summer haircut to help her beat the heat.

Safe summer surroundings

In extreme temperatures, you need to be aware of what kind of environment your pet is in and for how long. Exposure to hot asphalt, for instance, should be kept at a minimum so as not to burn footpads. Likewise, don’t ever keep a pet waiting in a hot car, where temperatures can soar to deadly heights in minutes. And even though summer backyard parties seem a protected place for your pets, don’t leave them unattended around water, hot grilles or guests who enjoy feeding them unhealthy treats.

In the summer, vets see a large number of pets that have fallen from high-rise balconies or out of screenless windows. Be sure that as you spend time on your apartment porch or balcony, or leave windows open, that you take necessary precautions to keep your pet from falling off or out.

Summer weather offers a great time to enjoy life with your pet. Just remember that Kitty or Spot can’t ask for help — they rely on you to keep them healthy, cool and safe.

Plants add to a room’s decor and even help freshen the air circulating in an apartment. But if your previous efforts to maintain a plant ended in brown disaster, you may be wary of acquiring a leafy housemate. Fortunately, there are a number of plants that can go leaf-to-leaf with even the blackest of thumbs.

Here are some hardy, hard-to-kill houseplants that just might be right for a green-thumb-challenged apartment.

● The cast-iron plant, or aspidistra elatior, was a favorite in the sooty houses of Victorian England. It can tolerate below-freezing temperatures and low levels of light. This is not a showy plant, as it grows very slowly.

● Certain ivy plants can also thrive under the light of a 60-watt bulb. If you like plants with long, trailing vines, a pothos variety should suit you nicely. You can even prune the plant and place the cuttings in water to start new plants. Note that ivy isn’t a good plant for an apartment with pets: the leaves can be toxic, if eaten.

● Snake plant, also known as “mother-in-law’s tongue,” has long, pointed leaves and can make a striking accent piece. Snake plants prefer bright sunlight and can’t take temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, but fortunately like drier soil; it’s hard to under-water this plant.

● Zanzibar gem is another low-light-tolerant plant that prefers under-watering to over-watering. Like the ivy, it’s not a good plant if you have children or pets that may try to eat the leaves.

● A cyclamen will go dormant during the summer, but, if you can keep it out of bright light during this dormant period and give it generally high humidity, you’ll be rewarded with a long-blooming flower in winter.

● A jade plant can go up to a month between waterings in the winter, but you will need to give it an annual pruning to keep it healthy.

● If your apartment has room for a tree (and is relatively humid), consider a dwarf umbrella, which can grow four- to five-feet-tall and adapt to different levels of light.

● Finally, for those who really don’t like watering, there are always cacti. These might be best if you have a southern-facing window or a balcony, as they like at least a couple of hours of full sun each day.

How to Keep Cool in Your Apartment For Less

When temperatures are on the rise, it seems like you only have two options: run the A/C until you get goose bumps and a power bill bigger than the national debt, or save your pennies and sweat it out hoping you don’t get heat stroke.

But there are ways you can control the temperature in your apartment and keep your energy bill down. Follow these steps for a cooler apartment and lower bills.

Cool down your apartment
There are many steps you can take to cool down your apartment without blasting the air conditioner.

•Cross ventilation is the key. Open windows on both sides of your apartment to allow air circulation.
•Window fans work best when blowing air out, so put your fan on the sunny side of the apartment and let it expel the hot air while pulling cool air from open windows on the shady side.
•Keep shades or curtains pulled on the sunny side of the house.
•Make your own personal air conditioner by placing a bowl of ice in front of a fan and letting it blow on you.
•If your apartment has a ceiling fan, use it.
•Replace incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent. This will also save energy.
•If you get a lot of direct sunlight, think about window films to block heat. They will also keep heat from going out the windows in the winter.
Act cool
Sometimes what you do in your apartment can raise the inside temperature or make you fell hotter. Take these steps to make you feel cooler.

•Exercise and do strenuous activities in the evening or early morning when temperatures are lower.
•Pace yourself when performing household activities, such as cooking or cleaning, and don’t over-exert yourself.
•Keep wet. Take tepid baths or showers, or go swimming in the community pool.
•Avoid opening and closing the refrigerator and freezer often, as the harder they work, the more heat they put out.
•Put cold cloths or ice on your pulse points, especially on the neck and wrists.
•If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Spend as much time as possible in the cooler areas of your apartment.
•Instead of an oven, use your microwave or a toaster oven. Or choose meal elements involving items that don’t require baking, such as sandwiches.
Dress cool
Make sure what you’re wearing is not working against these cooling techniques.

•Think light, both in color and in fabric.
•Natural fabrics like cotton are much cooler than most synthetics, although there are new high-tech synthetics made specifically to keep you cool.
•Loose fitting clothes allow air to circulate, keeping you cooler.
•The fewer clothes, the better; but make sure your apparel is appropriate for your roommates or houseguest.
Eat and drink cool
What you put in your body can have almost as much effect as what you put on your body.

•Dehydration can sneak up on you, so make sure to drink plenty of water.
•Limit caffeinated, alcoholic or carbonated beverages, as they can speed up dehydration.
•Fruit juices and sports beverages can help replace minerals lost due to sweating, but don’t overdo it. They are also full of sugar, which can cause dehydration.
•Eat small, light meals.
•Eat foods high in water content, like fruits and vegetables.
Get out of there
When all else fails, hang out somewhere cool: a movie theater (one reason summer movies do so well), a mall, a library, a museum or even a friend’s house. Spending just a couple of hours in a cool environment will make you feel much better.

Apartment Grilling Safety

Summer is approaching, and it's time to begin thinking of enjoying more time outdoors and inviting your friends over for a barbecue. The goal is to have fun, so make sure you follow a few safety tips so fun is all you will experience.

When you're ready to grill, make sure your grill is placed at a safe distance away from your apartment, wooden porch or deck railing, low-hanging branches, flammable liquids, and other combustible materials. Some experts recommend at least 10 to 12 feet of distance from anything susceptible to the heat of your grill.

If you have a charcoal grill, one of the most imperative safety measures you can take is to make certain your coals are completely out before you toss them. Just leave them alone – at least overnight to make sure. Sometimes a charcoal briquette can remain active even overnight if it's buried in the middle of the ashes. So even though you may think your coals have gone completely out, remember just one spark can cause a fire. If you need to get rid of the coals, remove them from the hot grill and use cold water to make sure all embers are completely cooled.

If you have a gas grill, you should take the time to make sure there are no leaks in the gas lines – before you light up the grill. You can use a product especially made to test for leaks or you can use dishwashing liquid to see whether air bubbles occur where the gas lines are connected. Play it safe and take just a little extra care and precaution to make sure everyone has fun on the patio and no one is injured from carelessness.

Contemporary
A modern or contemporary look has sleek lines, minimal frills and neutral colors with a few vibrant accents. Ingredients

8 ounces chopped semisweet chocolate, melted

4 cups crisped rice cereal (such as Rice Krispies)

2 pints mint chocolate-chip ice cream, slightly softened

Directions

1.In a large bowl, combine the chocolate and cereal until the cereal is completely coated. Transfer to a 9-inch springform pan. Press the mixture into the bottom and 1 inch up the sides of the pan. Freeze just until firm, 5 to 10 minutes.

2.Spread the ice cream in the prepared crust and freeze, covered, until firm, for at least 2 hours and up to 3 days.

Lake Ridge Winery's Harvest Festival

We invite you to come and join us as we celebrate our harvest at the 21st Annual Harvest Festival at Lakeridge Winery on June 17th, 18th and 19th. The event will be held Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This three-day outdoor festival will feature live music, over 100 arts & craft vendors, grape stomping and award-winning Lakeridge Wines. A $2 donation will be accepted at the gate to benefit the Hospice Foundation and there is no charge to park.

We will also have a Lakeridge Winery booth on the festival grounds where you can sign up for your chance to snag a great prize! We took a vote and, by much demand, will be giving away a flat screen HDTV! There is no charge to enter the giveaway, so be sure to stop by the booth!

Complimentary winery tours and wine tasting will be held throughout the festival and great specials will be offered in our Wine Shop. Plenty of seating will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own chairs and blankets. No coolers or picnic baskets please, as we have everything you need. There will be a variety of food and beverages for purchase including several domestic and imported beers, along with your favorite Lakeridge wines by the glass.

In honor of this year's plentiful harvest, a special Blessing of the Harvest will take place each day at 1:30 p.m. We will also celebrate with the long-time favorite of grape stomping, which is fun for the entire family! Guests of all ages wishing to test their fortitude and stamina can compete in the sweet and slippery grape stomp arena pits to race against one another and the clock. Winners of each timed 2-minute stomp-off will receive a valuable prize, along with adoration from our cheering crowd.

The Heat is ON!

It’s hot outside and your air conditioner will be working overtime. If you find you’re A/C is not working properly, please call in a service request right away and turn off the unit until someone can repair it. Letting the unit operate while not working properly may delay the repair by causing it to freeze up.

Our maintenance team works hard so you don’t have to! They are happy to repair any problems you have, but remember: the summer is their busiest time of year. Service requests will be handled in the order they are received, with emergency repairs taking priority over routine maintenance. Also, please be aware that our Maintenance team will not go in to complete a work request if there is a loose dog in the apartment and the resident is not there, so make sure to put your pets away for the day if you are unable to be present at that time. Be assured that they will get to you as soon as possible. We appreciate you “keeping your cool” over this very “hot” issue!

Renters Insurance... PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY!

Dear Valued Residents,

Recently within our apartment portfolio we have experienced two stove grease fires that occurred when a resident was cooking. In both incidents neither renter had “RENTERS INSURANCE”. In one situation the fire itself caused minor damage however, the water from the sprinkler system and Fire Department caused severe damage to the resident’s apartment as well as the neighbors below. The cost for repair, cleaning, and replacement of furnishings exceeded $5,000. In the other incident the staff arrived on the scene and was able to put the fire out in time to keep the sprinkler system from flooding their apartment and the apartments below! The cost for the damage to the apartment stove, cabinets and cleaning up of smoke damage still exceeded $5,000.

In the past two months we have experienced forest fires near some of our apartment communities. Fortunately the quick action of the local fire departments kept the fire from spreading into the apartment communities. This could have been catastrophic loss for hundreds of residents. With no renters insurance your personal belongings would not be covered by the apartment community’s property insurance.

To those of you who reside in any of our coastal communities, hurricane season is beginning in June just weeks away. Storm damage is probable in the wake of a hurricane. Damage to your personal items from any type of storm is not covered under the apartment community’s property insurance. Many of you have seen the recent devastation in North Carolina and Georgia from tornado activity. If your building is damaged or destroyed you are not covered for your personal belongings.

What you need to know is that YOU are personally liable for damages to the apartment community as well as damage to units surrounding you even if the Fire Department creates the damage with their equipment and water! This could be financially devastating to you and your family. Below are list of the many reasons you need to be insured.

Did you know that if lightning were to strike your apartment building causing damage to your electronics (TV, computer, etc.) you would be responsible for the replacement/repair costs of these items? The Landlord’s insurance is not.

Did you know that if lightening were to strike your apartment building causing a fire you are responsible for all of the personal contents inside your apartment home? The Landlord’s insurance is not.

Did you know that if a neighbor leaves a candle unattended causing a fire, and/or smoke or water damages your personal belongings, Integra Meadows would not be responsible for the loss? And, if your neighbor does not have their own personal property insurance, again, you would be responsible for the replacement cost of these items.

Did you know that if a hurricane or tropical storm causes your apartment’s roof to leak or windows to break causing water damage to your personal belongings, the replacement cost of your items would not be covered by the landlord’s insurance?

And finally, did you know that if a visitor is injured in your apartment or at the community while visiting you, you could be held liable for their medical expenses and more? Your current and future earnings could be at risk.

Many people are under the impression that an apartment communities’ insurance will cover such losses but this is inaccurate. The landlord’s policy does not include liability for something that happens in your rented residence or to your personal belongings.

How can you protect yourself and all of your personal property? Please obtain renter’s insurance. It is fairly inexpensive and your car insurance company may offer discounts for multiply policies. Most insurance carriers can help you select just the coverage you need based on exactly what you own so the renter’s insurance policy will suite your specific needs. The average annual cost for renter’s insurance today is approximately $120 per year a small price to pay to be able to replace your entire household. Often times you can add renter’s insurance through your current automobile insurance policy for a better rate!

Section 8 of your lease agreement clearly expresses your need for insurance and your responsibility for protecting your personal property. Please protect yourself and your property by contacting your insurance company and begin a renter’s insurance policy today!

Last but not least: This picture was taken on May 17, 2011 from a local apartment community where the neighboring woods began to burn. High winds caused the fire to spread quickly. Fortunately the local fire department was able to contain the fire. As you can see by the picture, there is a car in the parking area next to an apartment building and had this fire gotten out of control several people could have lost everything. Protect yourself! Don’t be a victim!

Osceola School District's Out of Zone Requests

The window for Osceola School District parents to request an out-of-zone (OOZ) transfer for the 2011/2012 school year will end on June 1, 2011. Applications will not be accepted after June 1, 2011. All out-of-zone transfer requests for elementary, middle, and high school will be handled at the district level in the following manner:

- Parents/guardians may pick up out-of-zone transfer forms from the home-zoned school or school their student is currently attending. Forms may also be picked up at Student Services, located at 801 Bill Beck Boulevard in Kissimmee.

- Parents/guardians completing the out-of-zone requests, please make sure to answer all questions on the form. Incomplete information may result in a processing delay. Completed forms may be hand-carried to Student Services, located at 801 Bill Beck Blvd., Kissimmee, or sent in by mail. Schools will not process, deliver, or forward the completed forms.

- Once the out-of-zone request is received at the district level, supporting information from the student database, as well as the approved criteria guidelines, will be used to approve or deny the request.

- An approval or denial letter will be forwarded to the parents/guardians, to the home-zoned school, and the requested school.

- The approval letter will reiterate the principal’s prerogative to revoke the out-of-zone if the student does not comply with the responsibilities of acceptable standards in the areas of conduct, attendance, and grades as outlined in the out-of-zone agreement. Additionally, the parent/guardian will be directed to contact the school to complete a schedule request for his/her child.

- Parents/guardians are responsible for out-of-zone student transportation.

- Parents/guardians will continue to have the right to request an appeal by contacting the Student Services office. Appeal information will be provided in the denial letter.

Huntington's Desease 101

Imagine having the worst aspects of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Lou Gehrigh’s Diseases all at once. For the 30,000 Americans living with Huntington’s Disease this is an everyday reality and struggle.

Huntington’s Disease (HD) is a devastating, hereditary, degenerative brain disorder. It causes the loss of cognitive, behavioral and physical control, and presently, there is no treatment or cure. HD slowly diminishes an individual’s ability to walk, think, talk and reason. Symptoms usually appear in an individual between 30 and 50 years of age and progress over a 10 to 25 year period.

Eventually, every person with HD becomes totally dependent upon others for his or her care.
This May, the Huntington’s Disease Society of America needs your help to raise awareness of HD, and to help educate our community and provide support and services to families affected by HD.

Reporting Suspicious Activity...

What would you do if you saw someone involved in a questionable activity in your apartment community? We all know the importance of being aware and vigilant about safety in and around our apartments. So, when we witness or suspect something out of the ordinary going on, we want to determine the right course of action to take to address the situation quickly. Read our suggestions on the best approaches to reporting suspicious activities in your neighborhood.

Forming a stronger community - Neighbors and friends should play a strong role in establishing a network of awareness and action in your apartment community. Consider starting or getting involved in a neighborhood watch program in your apartment community. These are formal programs in which citizens meet regularly to establish and discuss neighborhood safety. Get together with your neighbors to form a community of observers (not snoopers!) who stay in contact with each other about what is going on in the apartment community. By setting up regular meetings to learn and discuss awareness techniques, you prioritize safety in your community. You might even invite local law enforcement to give a public safety workshop to your neighborhood watch group.

Paying attention to your environment - Of course, you also want to take basic precautions to protect your own apartment. Make sure you get to know both your neighborhood and your neighbors. In apartment communities, typically, the sheer number of residents makes it difficult or impossible to know everyone. In addition to the friends and neighbors you make, there are bound to be some strangers to you, as well. As you observe people, how do you tell the difference between people going about their business and someone involved in a potentially harmful or illegal situation? If you see strange behavior or hear unusual noises — strange or unusual enough that you feel concern — then, for your own peace of mind, some action may be necessary. You want to gauge the extent of that action on the amount of concern you feel and the evidence that you have observed. You might find it prudent to discuss activities you witness or suspect with your network of apartment community friends and neighbors. They may (or may not) have witnessed similar events and perhaps have come to similar conclusions. Collaboration could add to the evidence you will present to whatever authority you decide to contact to formally deal with the situation.

Here are some situations that present definite red flags:

•Strangers looking into apartment windows or parked cars
•Vehicles moving slowly through the neighborhood without lights
•Seeing someone being forced into a vehicle against their will
•Strangers sitting in cars or going out of their way to talk to children
•Unusual noises, including violent arguing

Taking the next step - How should you move forward, when the time comes that you feel you must alert authorities to a situation? Most communities have a 911 system you can use to get in touch with police or security agencies. You might know to contact a certain agency that handles particular concerns. If you have evidence that a child might be in danger, you would contact your community’s child services division, for instance. You want to be able to report details. Facts, in addition to your hunches, are very important to help authorities prioritize your concerns. Be sure to take note of descriptive details about suspicious individuals, the license plate numbers of any cars involved, and what you actually observed as you report to police or other official agencies.

The people have spoken - One of the most useful and exciting features of the Web is its ability to bring people (and their opinions) together. If achieving a “work-life balance” were easy, there wouldn’t be so many articles and advice books on the subject. But what does it mean to achieve a “balanced life?” When you are able to maintain balance, you don’t feel as if your life is overwhelmed by any one task. You’re not spending so much time working that you don’t know what your non-work self is like, and you’re not constantly stressed by an unmanageable to-do list. You feel that you are actually living, rather than just rushing through the days.

Here are some suggestions on how to bring your life more into balance.

Prioritize sleep, exercise, and eating - When many responsibilities all call for our attention, it becomes easy for us to allow some of our most basic and healthful needs to be downplayed. Proper sleep and exercise help ensure our bodies are operating at full capacity, and they leave us feeling more relaxed as we live out each day. Pay attention to your body’s needs and rhythms, and honor them as best you can. Prioritizing eating and the food you choose does not necessarily mean that you have to spend more money on food, or even force yourself to eat more healthily. It does mean being mindful of what and when you are eating. If you know you spend four out of five work lunches wolfing down something at your desk, allow yourself the freedom of a planned lunch out. And if you’re going to eat ten Oreos in a row one afternoon, make sure you enjoy them.

Identify and rethink your coping behaviors - If you’re very stressed, chances are you’re using something — maybe shopping, alcohol, or those Oreos — to help you feel better. While coping mechanisms are understandable human traits, you may want to think about alternative healthy activities that would allow you to relax without potentially draining your budget or leaving you feeling poorly. Maintaining balance in your life means being aware of the things that stress you and attempting to change them or cope with them before you feel compelled to resort to behavior that will be counterproductive to your well-being. Instead of spending money, for instance, focus on another activity you enjoy. Instead of drinking or eating more than you will enjoy in order to relieve your stress, take the time to figure out why you would want to do those things in the first place.

Schedule time for quiet - Whether it’s prayer, meditation, yoga, writing in a journal, or just sitting and paying attention to your breath, having a few protected minutes of quiet in your day can be healing and revitalizing. Invest this time in a restful activity — watching TV, checking Facebook, or playing video games may not work as well for helping you feel more balanced.

Figure out what you can let go of - If you are simply trying to cram too much into 24 hours, you may need to cut some activities out of your packed schedule. It may not be obvious at first what you need to drop. Some experts recommend tracking your time; others, tracking your moods. Has one of your friends turned into an emotional vampire? Is that side project that once seemed so exciting now exhausting? Is your Saturday night out leaving you feeling bleak on Sunday? An honest appraisal of the events and relationships in your life may help you prioritize and potentially change some of them for the better.

Assess the “work” part of the work-life balance - Keep in mind that taking steps like these to improve your work-life balance may not go far enough to mitigate the negative effects of a job that is simply not suited to your personality, no matter how much that job pays. If you can’t leave a job that you find awful immediately, then make yourself a promise that at a definite date in the future — three months, six months, a year from now — you will re-evaluate your options. Write down your escape plan, as if you were formalizing a contract with yourself. If you find you have trouble clearly evaluating all the pieces of your life, you might want to consult a therapist, spiritual leader, or trusted friend to help you talk it all out.

Whether you “live to work” or “work to live,” you can always strive to streamline your life and make all its pieces work together more smoothly. Balance is an important goal for being happy with the things you have to do, as well as the things you want to do — and may help you deal with the difference between the two.

~ St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is believed that he died on March 17 in the year 461 AD. Celebrated on February 14, Valentines Day is the festival of love birds across the world, irrespective of the nation, caste, religion or creed. Love birds across the nation await this event desperately throughout the year. However the story of its origin is still under blurred sacks. Some trace it to Lupercalia, an ancient Roman festival while other experts associate the event with two saints named valentine of the early Christian church. Get organized: Many of us would like to be better organized. Whether it’s paper clutter in the “landing area” of your apartment, closets that are overflowing, or a child’s room with contents that migrate all over the apartment, getting serious about keeping your possessions under control is an excellent New Year’s resolution.
Clean more often: Even though cleaning is not a favorite pastime for most of us, no one would argue that the quality of life in our home improves in direct proportion to its cleanliness. Discover what motivates you to keep your place clean, whether it’s setting up a cleaning chore chart with your roommates or adding green materials to your cleaning regimen. Make keeping your apartment cleaner part of your goal-setting plan for the year.
Redecorate: Is your apartment stuck in a decade that you are tired of visiting? Or maybe you moved in a year ago but never got around to actually hanging pictures on the walls? If you find yourself in a decor rut as the old year is ending, make interior designing your New Year’s resolution. Get inspired, set your priorities, write up a budget, and start making it happen. With Christmas right around the corner our office has become a warehouse for packages delivered to our residents =). Just remember that on Christmas Eve, Friday, 12/24/10, our offices will close at 12:30pm and the Clubhouse will close at 6:00pm so make sure to come in to pick up your packages before then! If you are not sure if your package has arrived just give us a call at the office and we will check for you.

NEW YEAR'S EVE SAFETY TIPS...

New Years Eve is a huge night for everyone, which means crowds will be swarming toward all the metropolitan hubs around the world. People feed off eachothers' excitement, and sometimes things can get out of hand if safety precautions are not taken. Everyone wants to have an unforgettable night (in a good way!). By simply using some common sense, we can keep it that way. Ring in the New Year safely!

Designate a Driver: If you are going to be driving New Years Eve, don't drink and drive. If you have a friend who does not prefer to drink, make sure they take the wheel. You might even be on the water this New Years Eve. The person in charge of navigating the boat needs to be cautious, and this still applies to them! It is important to be safe on the water as well, so drink sensibly.

Don't forget about your pets! They are just as much a part of the family as everyone else. If you are using fireworks, anything with loud noises, or fire, be sure that pets are kept at a distance as well as children. None of these are a good mix. Candles are also a potential hazard.

Be Alert: Be aware of your surroundings and how others are acting. Stay away from those who are out of control and might cause harm. Taking preventive measures is key. If someone is really intoxicated, prevent them from trying to drive or leaving with someone they do not know. It's important to keep an eye out for each other.

Don't Drive: If you don't have to go behind the wheel, avoid it. More people will be driving under the influence on this particular night, so avoid a potentially dangerous accident by staying off the road. Otherwise, be alert and drive defensively. Most importantly, wear your seatbelt! Also, using public transportation is a wise option. If taking a cab is too expensive, crashing at a friend's place nearby is a convenient solution.

Stick Together: This way we can look out for our friends and family. Going out to parties and nightclubs means a fast-paced, crazy night; so be sure to travel in groups. Having a safety net around you in this environment, especially for women, is imperative.

Monitor your Alcohol Intake: A majority of people will be drinking on New Years Eve, and there is nothing wrong with that. Just be sure to pay attention to how much you and others are consuming. Drinking too much alcohol can have lethal affects. Be responsible.

So you are undecided on what to do to celebrate the new year. Here's a few things you can do to welcome 2011:

• Celebration Towne Center
A great place to be this New Years Eve Weekend. Back by popular demand, Celebration Town Center will bring the New Year in with a bang at an all new fun, family friendly celebration like none other. The event will kick off with special reunion-show performances by VonRay (as heard on the Smallville soundtrack and more) followed by the sensational sounds of the multi-talented Mo Geetz Band and live music throughout the streets. Then stick around till the clock strikes midnight and catch the fireworks spectacular and music until 1:00 a.m.

•Old Town
Ring in the New Year at Old Town in Kissimmee. There will be something for everyone to do, food, kids' activities, music and more! Enjoy classic rock n’ roll performed by cover band Reunion, taking the stage at 7:30pm. Rides and the fireworks show at midnight. Free admission.

THEME PARK NEW YEAR'S EVE CELEBRATIONS

•Walt Disney World Theme Parks
The Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios are all open past midnight for a special night of family celebrations to ring in the New Year.

•Universal Orlando Theme Parks
Extended hours at both parks. Islands of Adventure is open till 10:00pm and Universal Studios will stay open until 1:00 am with special events for New Year's Eve.

•SeaWorld Orlando
Enjoy a New Year’s Eve bash at SeaWorld Orlando. Dance to a 14-piece band, jazz musicians and a DJ keeping the party going all the way through midnight.

Apple Walnut Cake

INGREDIENTS:
- 2 cups white sugar
- 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/2 pound butter
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 3 cups sliced Macintosh apples

1. Preheat oven to 350º F. Butter and flour one 10” tube pan. 2. Cream together the butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition. Set aside. 3. Sift together the flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add to wet ingredients and mix well. 4. Stir in vanilla, walnuts and apples. Mix well and pour into prepared pan. 5. Bake at 350º F for approximately 1 hour or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Set aside to cool. Slide knife along outer edges to release bottom of tube pan. Slide knife along bottom of tube pan and inner tube to release cake.

STAYING SAFE THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS

Dear Residents,

Tis the season for increased crime activity. Take every precaution that you can to keep you and yours safe this holiday season!

• Always be mindful that thieves are opportunists... removing opportunities for a criminal to commit a crime will reduce your chances of becoming a victim.

• Most people display their Christmas trees in a window in the front of their homes. Almost always there will be a bounty of wrapped gifts under that tree. Whenever you leave your home for an extended period of time be sure to pull those drapes shut or close your blinds to remove those gifts from the view of a thief. If you have a live tree closing those drapes will help it stay fresh longer too.

• When you leave your home for an extended period of time make certain it is secure. The weather is great this time of year and many people like to leave their doors and windows open. Be sure to close and lock them before you leave your residence unattended. Ditto for vehicles parked in your driveway.

• Unlocked cars are almost always the first ones to be burglarized.

• If you are out shopping or are coming home from shopping, be sure to keep your gifts out of view. A bounty of new toys, electronics or other shopping bags can be very tempting for a criminal.

• Christmas almost always means new bikes, trikes, skateboards, and a myriad of toy vehicles will be out in full force in the days following Santa’s visit. Many of the operators of these new acquisitions will be inexperienced. Make certain your kids understand the rules of the road and wear helmets whenever appropriate. Even more important... be on the lookout for these “inexperienced” riders and drivers when you are driving through Integra Meadows.

SAFETY AND THE HOLIDAYS… MAKING THEM MERRY…

With the holidays approaching, traffic will be hard to deal with, parking spaces will be hard to find in establishments, long lines everywhere we go, kids will be out of school and running around, the cool and dry weather will make snakes and alligators move around (in places you may not like or want)… so… give yourself plenty of extra time for that traffic, have patience when that parking spot is hard to find or worse when you are waiting for the space and someone takes it from you, make time go faster and talk to the person in front or back of that long line, drive slow and focus on the drive so all those kids are safe and when all those critters come out don't play or antagonize them, call the proper authority. Here are a few tips to help the holiday season be a safe and merry one:

Shop with friends or relatives if possible; there IS safety in numbers. As you shop, be alert in crowded places. Among pickpockets' favorites are revolving doors, jammed aisles, elevators, and public transportation stops and vehicles, especially at rush hour. Carry the day's most expensive purchases closest to your body, and don't carry so much you lose the ability to react quickly. If possible, leave your children with a baby-sitter while you are shopping. For holiday shopping, consider making arrangements with family or friends/neighbors, and take turns baby-sitting. If you take your children with you, keep a close eye on them while shopping.
Travel and conduct your business during daylight hours if possible. When driving, keep doors locked and windows rolled up. When returning to your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings; scan the area from time to time. Avoid concentrating so hard on shopping that you fail to keep track of your surroundings, others near you, or your personal property. Carry your keys in your hand and be ready to unlock the door and enter as quickly as possible. As you approach your vehicle, scan the area, glance underneath the vehicle, and take a quick look inside before entering.

Using debit or credit cards is much safer than carrying a lot of cash.

If planning a "road trip" over the holidays, have your vehicle services and checked out sufficiently far ahead to allow for repairs if needed. Don't forget to have the mechanic check your spare tire and all fluid levels along with the other preventive maintenance procedures.

Dear Residents,

We have been having some issues with residents parking their vehicles by the curb, blocking other people's vehicles or in front of garages that belong to someone else. Please remember that these residents are paying a monthly rent on these garages for the convenience of having an assigned parking space, and it is not so convenient to get home and find that someone else is blocking their garage entrance. These residents also have the right to have the vehicles that are completely blocking their garage towed!

Paula Deen’s Pumpkin Pie Recipe… YUUUMMMMM….

Ingredients:

~ 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened

~ 2 cups canned pumpkin, mashed

~ 1 cup sugar

~ 1/4 teaspoon salt

~ 1 egg plus 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten

~ 1 cup half-and-half

~ 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) melted butter

~ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

~ 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

~ 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, optional

~ 1 piece pre-made pie dough

~ Whipped cream, for topping

Directions:

- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

- Place 1 piece of pre-made pie dough down into a (9-inch) pie pan and press down along the bottom and all sides. Pinch and crimp the edges together to make a pretty pattern. Put the pie shell back into the freezer for 1 hour to firm up. Fit a piece of aluminum foil to cover the inside of the shell completely. Fill the shell up to the edges with pie weights or dried beans (about 2 pounds) and place it in the oven. Bake for 10 minutes, remove the foil and pie weights and bake for another 10 minutes or until the crust is dried out and beginning to color.

- For the filling, in a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese with a hand mixer. Add the pumpkin and beat until combined. Add the sugar and salt, and beat until combined. Add the eggs mixed with the yolks, half-and-half, and melted butter, and beat until combined. Finally, add the vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger, if using, and beat until incorporated.

- Pour the filling into the warm prepared pie crust and bake for 50 minutes, or until the center is set. Place the pie on a wire rack and cool to room temperature. Cut into slices and top each piece with a generous amount of whipped cream.
