and those that continue to serve!

Have a great Holiday weeked!

Buddy Poppy

Memorial Day was originally created to honor Union soldiers who’d died while fighting in the Civil War. Because of this, southern states did not observe Memorial Day until after World War I, when the holiday was expanded to include soldiers from all wars.

The red poppy is a traditional symbol of Memorial Day (many veterans wear them to commemorate the day).

The poppy was inspired by (World War I -era) John McCrae poem “In Flanders Fields”:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

The “though poppies grow in Flanders fields” in the poem is thought by some to refer to the blood stains from shallow graves where soldiers were buried.

In 1924, an artificial poppy factory was created in Pittsburgh, PA, and employed veterans who needed work.

Look who came to visit you today..

A peacock without his feathers is like a king without a crown, a tiger without its stripes, a cowboy without his boots. The male of the peafowl species, the peacock has long symbolized beauty, regality and pride. Like many male birds, the peacock's appearance far outshines that of the demure peahen, and he showcases these famous feathers to drive those chicks wild.

This young lady here at Integra Meadows must be looking for her male peafoul....

All it takes is a box – the rest will follow…

Harbor House sees high numbers of women and children in our emergency shelter every summer. We are already operating over capacity and pulling out the cots and air mattresses so families can be safe.

All it takes is a box – the rest will follow…

•1000 pillows for survivors to rest their heads on at night.

•Diapers for the newborns and infants in our childcare.

•Cleaning supplies to keep our shelter looking like home.

•A great team-building project for you and your community to help these women and children have the resources to heal.

Before I Was Myself, You Made Me, Me

Before I was myself you made me, me
With love and patience, discipline and tears,
Then bit by bit stepped back to set me free,

Allowing me to sail upon my sea,
Though well within the headlands of your fears.
Before I was myself you made me, me

With dreams enough of what I was to be
And hopes that would be sculpted by the years,
Then bit by bit stepped back to set me free,

Relinquishing your powers gradually
To let me shape myself among my peers.
Before I was myself you made me, me,

And being good and wise, you gracefully
As dancers when the last sweet cadence nears
Bit by bit stepped back to set me free.

For love inspires learning naturally:
The mind assents to what the heart reveres.
And so it was through love you made me, me
By slowly stepping back to set me free.

The Scoop!

The Scoop ( on poop )

It's common courtesy. Cleaning up after your dogs shows respect for our neighbors and our community. Only irresponsible dog owners leave their dog's poop for others to look at, step in or clean up.
